Topic 1. Overview of MEXT scholarship

*Notes: This part just can give you some brief understand of MEXT scholarship. To search the up to date detail information about MEXT scholarship each year, you better going to official website of Ministry of Education, Culture, Sport, Science and Technology in here or Embassy/Consulate of your country.

1. WHAT IS MEXT SCHOLARSHIP ?

According to Ministry of Education, Culture, Sport, Science and Technology (stand for MEXT), “MEXT” Scholarship is the Government scholarship offered by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan. To date, there are 65,000 students from approximately 160 countries and regions around the world have studied in Japan under the Japanese Government Scholarship program established in 1954. MEXT offers totally 7 types of scholarship which includes: Research students, Teacher training students, Undergraduate students, Japanese studies students, College of technology students, Special training college student, Young leader program (YLP) students. The scope of this site will only mention about MEXT for Research student and Undergraduate students because these application types gain most concern of applicants all around the world.

2. PURPOSE OF JAPANESE GOVERNMENT AND TREND OF MEXT SCHOLARSHIP

The purpose of MEXT scholarship aims to promote friendly relation between Japan to other countries. Furthermore, it cannot deny the fact that every strong nations often want to influence their power to the other countries, especially poor countries. Beside giving those countries ODA, financial aid, etc. one of “tool” the Japanese Government using is education – in this case is giving qualified people in those poor countries scholarship. Furthermore, Japanese government also gain benefits from MEXT scholar in 2 points: Firstly, in recent years, Japanese Government is trying to attract the foreign high quality human resource, The MEXT sholar is a kind of high quality human resource. If after graduating, MEXT scholars decide to stay to work in Japan, those people will contribute a lot in the development of Japanese economy. Secondly, for the MEXT scholars who decide to come back to their home town, they will play a significant role in connecting between their country to Japan in term of many aspects: education, technology, business and so on.

The trend of MEXT scholarship changes every 10 years. Let me explain more about it. Japan has many unique aspects in their culture. Their culture has both advantages and disadvantages. In fact, not many foreigners can adapt the disadvantages of Japanese culture – one of those disadvantages is “workaholic”. Therefore, not many people in the developed countries put MEXT as their 1st choice scholarship option because the education system in their countries is good enough so Japan will never become their desired destination. MEXT trend is popular to the people in developing and poor countries (D&P) like South East Asia, South Asia, Middle East Asia, Africa because of some below reasons:

  • Education system in their countries are bad
  • For the low standard of living in D&P countries, MEXT allowance is still a significant amount of $
  • The people in those D&P countries want to learn from Japanese people discipline in working

  1. Dear Mextipedia team,

Thank you for creating such a useful site. It save me a lot of time.
I write this email to ask about embassy recommendation. I have a sensitive issue, I am a mute :(.
If I am selected to go to interview round, do embassy provide any special support for disable candidate (because I cannot speak). I have found a professor who willing to take me in and understand my situation. The problem is in the interview site only. I just afraid the fact I am a mute will make me being rejected in the interview because they cannot understand my mute language :(. I have been suffered a lot of discrimination during high school and university time.

Looking forward to hear from you soon,

    David Lee

    1. Hey David,
First of all We’re glad that our site helped you to find your doubts. We’re happy that our intention works some how.
Regarding your issue, You are not disable, you’ve the special ability to express which is not present in us.
And talent is judged not by speaking ability ! So don’t worry you will be treated as a special candidate at the time of interview for sure.
But I will highly recommend you please give a prior notice to the embassy after you get shortlisted for written and interview, so that they can prepare themselves.
For your kind information interview is focused on mainly “why Japan”, so I think it will not be a big deal.

From our team, a best wishes for you and looking forward to hear your experience too.
If you’ve any doubt please feel free to ask.

      Best Wishes,
      Santanu

    2. Dear David,
I’m Nicholas, a deaf student. Let’s say I kind of understand you when it comes to overcoming obstacles like these. I’ve never tried to apply for a MEXT scholarship so far (although I’d like to) and every Embassy has its own rules, so take what I’m going to say with a grain of salt.

I panicked too when I realized that an oral interview is a must in the process, therefore I contacted my Embassy. They reassured me and told me that, even though they never had a deaf applicant, they’ll do everything that they can to help me communicate smoothly. I think there’s also a chance to request a sign language interpreter, but for that they wrote a letter to the Ministry in Japan to ask for confirmation.

I will let you know as soon as I receive an answer from them. You can contact me here if you want to talk about it: nick.kastelruth96@gmail.com

      Sincerely,
      Nicholas.

    1. The airfare will cover the costs of one round trip i.e. the cost of flight tickets from your home country to japan when you leave for the first time after getting the scholarship and then when your studies are completed, the cost of tickets from japan back to your home country.

  3. Hello Mextipedia Team!
I’m just wondering if I could still get/pass my application form to consular offices, and is it necessary for exams/interviews to be done out of one’s country if it’s not the main city per se? I’m quite worried for the need to take a flight somewhere else hehe..

    1. If you’re going to Japan as a MEXT scholar chances are you won’t get a lot of time to do part-time jobs anyway. But you can always work and save up during vacations. As a student, you can work up to 28 hours a week. This is a combination of all the places you work, so if for example, you work two jobs, you can only work 14 hours at each one.

  4. Hi!
Your site has been very useful in helping me understand the steps needed for this scholarship.
I’m currently a first year undergraduate software engineering student through an apprenticeship. If I get my degree I’m hoping to pursue this scholarship as a postgraduate. I want to concentrate on my degree right now but I like to be prepared. Is there any preparation you’d recommend I do at this point besides learning Japanese?

    1. Give a few Language Proficiency Exams to strengthen your CV like, IELTS, TOEFL, TOEIC, JLPT (optional), etc. Start focusing on your field of study and research proposal. Bonus points if you read a few books, or do your research about Japan (it’s culture for example).

  5. hi ,
Thanks for your information. i am planning to do my P.hD in biology . my doubt is should we need to appear for any proficiency exam like ielts, toefl etc. And is japanese exam required for indian students to get the mext scholarship?

    Like

    1. You should definitely consider giving a Language Proficiency test because it will strengthen your CV and give you some advantage over the other students. As for Japanese Proficiency tests, you don’t really have to give any because as a Research student you will be given a 6-month Japanese learning course upon your arrival in Japan before you start conducting your research (whether or not you will be sent for this program depends on how you perform in the Japanese language test that the embassy will be conducting, but one does not have to necessarily pass in this test in order to get the scholarship as it is not of qualifying nature and is conducted simply to figure out if you require the 6-month intensive Japanese learning course.)

  7. Hi!
Thank you so much for the info. I want to apply for the undergraduate MEXT scholarship this year. Concerning the interview aspect, do I need to have my research also?
And will they ask me questions concerning any research as an undergraduate?

  8. Hello!

Glad for the good work. However many sites are not touching on Teacher Training Scholarship which has a different proceedure. I will highlight what I experienced in the Embassy of Japan in Kenya!

Exam and interviews are done on the same day. Only those who pass the exams are called back to attend the interviews. The interview is conducted by 2 Japanese gentlemen. They are very friendly and creat a relaxed environment. The results of the interviews are announced a week later. Those who didn’t pass the interview will be phoned while those who passed will only receive an email congratulating them and asking them to be aware that their eligibility might change depending on feedback from Tokyo. If your name is recommended to Tokyo then you are 99% to getting the scholarship.

Tokyo will then Lias with the desirable university to get the teacher placed in one of the universities. An admission letter is then sent to the embassy where you shall be called upon to sign the terms of the scholarship as you get orientation ahead of travel!!
